The Challenge 

As described here, the absence of essential attitudes for socio-economic transformation, collectively called the right mind-set for development, condemned sub-Saharan societies to a vicious cycle of poverty and underdevelopment. This challenge is foiling the efforts to realise Uganda Vision 2040.

Failure to realise Uganda Vision 2040 implies that in this next 50 years of independence (2012-2062):

  • Unemployment/underemployment levels will remain high,
  • Social unrest over land and other resources will increase,
  • Sectarianism will grow instead of abetting,
  • Environmental degradation will continue,
  • In general, the future of our children/grandchildren will be difficult, if not grim.

Addressing the Challenge             

It is through the upcoming generation that essential attitudes for socio-economic transformation can be established in Uganda and hence, the significance of this strategic national Education Innovation.

The innovation helps education to go beyond knowledge, skills, values and work-related attitudes, and grow the attitudes critical to development as the learners go through lower-secondary, mid-secondary, high school, and tertiary levels, with the aim of establishing the right mind-set for development in Uganda.

Benefits to Schools/Institutions
  1. In lower secondary, the education innovation promotes science and its application is solving a variety of societal problems and challenges.
  2. In mid secondary, it strengthens career guidance and the drive to create jobs or generate wealth.
  3. In high school, it promotes the overall understanding of information and communication technology (ICT) and of artificial intelligence (AI), and their applications in local settings.
  4. At tertiary level, it demystifies the challenge of unemployment or underemployment the educated among young people.
  5. Generally, the Innovation promotes student-centered learning, which is key in the new training curricula.
