Sub-Saharan Africa of yesterday and of today is less a product of the Berlin conference (1884-1885) and more an outcome of a problematic chapter in the history of the sub-continent,  which not only subdued the African mind at the time but hindered it from growing the attitudes critical to development. In this way, societies in sub-Saharan Africa were effectively robbed of the right mindset for development, as described below.
