Uganda’s Economy remains practically Unchanged

  • Uganda’s Economy remains practically Unchanged

Although Uganda has been independent for more than 60 years, and of which 40-50 years have been largely peaceful with remarkable economic growth, its economy remains practically unchanged (Fig. 1). For example, meaningful opportunities are for a handful few relative to the population and this has been the case since independence. While the scarcity of meaningful opportunities was not felt in the initial years of independence, mainly because few people had formal education then, it became increasingly felt over time, primarily as meaningful jobs/opportunities going to particular ethnic group(s). This scarcity has worsened and manifests itself as rising unemployment/underemployment, as desperate search for greener pastures, as increasing conflicts over land, as rapid degradation of the environment, and so on. It is moreover unlikely to improve (Fig 1b and Fig 2), a likelihood with tragic implications on our children/grandchildren.
